The graphics may not be pretty by this generations standard but both the console & the Wii sports pack it's bundled with are the most fun any of us have had with games in years ( not only us but our 4 year old daughter & even her grandparents as well as various friends of ours & their kids ) .

The games are all fun & perfect for showing off what makes the Wii so different - when you swing a bat , club , raquet or bowl at the 10 pins for that matter , you really do the movements you would do in real life ( well very nearly :) ) Just make sure you're loved ones are stood well clear when you play . Boxing is great ( our favourite ) you really do have to go for it , controller holding fists swinging ( not pressing buttons actually swinging & jabbing your hands & moving your body ) . If you want to burn calories whilst playing a game this is great . Only real downside is is occasionally doesnt register the odd punch but this is isnt a frequent problem .

Oh and if you lay out for an extra Wiimote - controller ( and a second nunchuk contoller if you want to box your friends it's the only one of these games that uses it ) 2 player is an amazing blast of fun both swinging your arms like dervishes hoping your doing it slightly better than your friend is ( you can have the boxers & other sportsmen/women actually lokk like you ( sort of if you have imagination :) ) via the WiiMii system also fun & easy to do ) .

Edit - Would recommend buying some rechargable AA batteries + charger ( takes 2 at a time the nunchuk plugs into it & shares it's batteries ) for the Wiimote if you dont already have any ( we've found each pair lasts a few days of heavyish use .

Last time I owned a console was in 1990, right from the Atari in the late 70's I have enjoyed gaming but eventually losing interest. Taken in by the hype and feedback by other users I decided to buy a Wii. Initially, I was very impressed, mainly by the new controls, the graphics, well, they were nothing to write home about. On a personal basis after this initial interest I have not used the Wii However, my son absolutely loves it. Generally, it is used for around 2 hours per day (maximum) - In nice weather we tell him to get outside instead!! although if left to his own devices he would be on it morning till night, and yes, which it has succeeded in, is allowing us to join him with a game of Lego Star Wars and Indiana Jones or Ben 10. My Wife has Wii Fit which does get used regularly (it would be interesting to see how many of these are gathering dust now!!)
What it also managed to do was get me interested in Gaming again and I went out and bought a PS3, although I would be very unfair to compare both systems, I do use the PS3 regularly because it is more 'my thing'.
I think if it wasn't for my son, the Nintendo would be just an expensive paperweight, although sitting with my PS3 I think they compliment each other nicely. Great for casual gaming and families with a good range of games, although alot are crap. But if you want more go for the 'next gen' consoles.

NINTENDO WII REVIEW

This is my review of the nintendo wii. First off I am in college and have had a snes, PS1, PS2, xbox, Gamecube, gameboy, gamegear and a crap load of other consoles. I'm telling you this so you can get a basic idea of what i have played. This is just my Opinion of THIS console and where it stands.

The nintendo wii had a massive hype and is currently selling better than its competitors the PS3 and Xbox 360. This however does not mean it is a better console. I got a wii because i was dragged into the hype and well i loved nintendo before =]

So.... I had read about it, seen pictures and could not wait to get my own console. When i did get it for X-mas it was great. Wii Sports was really not for me but i was hooked to Zelda. I played it non stop for 3 months then not at all.... yes thats right, not at all. Then suddenly i got red steel and i started again, then i stopped. Then i got Metroid Prime 3 and started again, then i stopped. Then i got into the recent Mario kart wii and even now, i have stopped again. So it was on and off. WHY =\ Because it all boils down to one word... 'casual'. Yes the wii is casual, it really is. Even games like Metroid 3 and Red Steel are not REALLY for the serious gamer.

Now luckily i am a big retro-head so i love my classic games and the wii lets you download these via a service built into it. You can download NES, SNES, N64, TG-16, MEGADRIVE, SEGA MASTER SYSTEM, C-64 and NEOGEO games from it for low prices. Its an awesome service sure but if you couldn't care less about the classics then it pointless. I spend about 95 percent of my time on the wii on these downloaded classics and rest on actual wii games, this is not the way it is supposed to be.

The wii retails for 180 pounds, a cheap and very good price for a console. Sure this is a good price but if you are enthusiastic and like to download the classic games on the console you will be spending over 200 quid just on these, so its not so cheap. The only question you need to ask is if the console is really next gen. IMO it is not. I'm not on about graphics because they are slightly better than the PS2 and not terrible and im not on about the games, but i am talking about the controls. They do work yes, and they are different and truly made of win when you first try them. However if you are serious you will be craving back the old D-pad or anologe stick controller in no-time. It is not that the wii remote is rubbish because it is a new approach and really is awesome with the nunchuck, its more the fact that you are waving and doing all this motion based crap that bogs it down, and frankly, it gets damn tiresome. It does improve FPS like Metroid and works well for minigames..... but why the hell do i wana play minigames on a next-gen console =S
It should also be noted that there is a classic controller you can buy for it to the play classic games but not many wii games support this feature, it would have been nice to have a choice.

The wii has a games libary that is strong from nintendo but 3rd party stuff really sucks. This means no GTA, no DEVIL MAY CRY and no general mature games. But if you do not mind this, the nintendo stuff is great. Overall it also has inferior online to the 360 and PS3. It had no Downloadable content for its games and no voicechat or textbox talking for online play. You just find a random person online in online games and thats it, you just play them.

The wiis display however is quite nice with its channels. It has a mii feature which you can create a mii of yourself, which is like a cartoon character that lives inside the console and that you can play as in some games. But again the degree of customization is limited and the mii you make to look like you will be far off. It also has a news and weather channel but this is a next-gen console and who gives a crap.

CONCLUSION

To conclude i will say that the wii can be either amazing or complete and utter rubbish depending who you are. IF you are a casual gamer then this is perfect and even if you are serious about gaming there is also fun to be had here. But do you really want to get one of these and play 3 mature games =\ or just get a PS3 or 360 and play a mountain of them.

I still play my wii now and then for the classic games but i have not played a wii game for about 2 months.

I'm off to get a PS3.

BYE =]

The Wii is aimed at everyone, everybody, everything, as it's supposed to take the traditional amount of button pressing and joypad expertise away from gaming and it make it something much more accessible. Which is a good thing. Now the whole family can join in and play the bundled Wii Sports or attempt to get fit with Wii Fit or play party games etc

Now the question on gamers' lips is 'it is just a fad'? Personally, I have struggled to see much depth to a lot of the Wii games so far (Mario Galaxy and Zelda are exceptions) but I do think that the motion sensitivity will only get more accurate and more innovative allowing for better games, and when I say better I mean games that deliver a lot more substance.

I also think it was a bad mistake on Nintendo's part to create something that is so behind the times on graphics that it takes graphics out of the equation. People are generally more likely to get blown away by graphics than anything else and as the other next-gen consoles only get better there's not much the Wii can do about it.

On the other hand, no other console has brought gaming to such a relaxed level of fun, with friends and family especially. And surely this is what gaming was supposed to be about. It wasn't supposed to be about dedicated gamers who play all night for high scores to boast about but people who can have a bit of fun playing something that doesn't pretend to be something more than it actually is - a game.
