Amazon.co.uk Review

While Electronic Arts' other sports games may be locked in a deadly rivalry with their competitors there really hasn't been a golf sim to go head-to-head with Tiger Woods for years. There doesn't seem to be too much laurel sitting going on though, especially since this is, like many Electronic Arts games this year, the first time the game has been designed specifically with the next generation of consoles in mind. Naturally that means the most realistic graphics yet, not only for the course itself but also for Tiger and the other real-world golfers. Their faces and expressions look totally life-like and on the PS3 and 360 you can use a webcam or digital camera to import your own face and graft it to your own in-game custom golfer.

In terms of gameplay the major new feature is the concept of "shot confidence" which monitors your performance through your whole career, adding an extra degree of tension to difficult shots but also allowing you to examine your game in detail to find out where you're going right and wrong. After criticisms that last year's game was a bit thin on options this new game has the greatest number of courses ever including Westchester Country Club, TPC Boston, Cog Hill and East Lake. There's also the expanded GamerNet mode which acts like a sort of YouTube just for the game, allowing you post in-game videos and challenge other people to a game in an online world dedicated to nothing but golf.

4 out of 5 stars Golf - a waste of a good walk - now without the walking!   October 12, 2008
J. Hamston (South London, UK)
This is my first Tiger Woods game on any format. I've had it a couple of weeks (opted for the 08 version after reading some of the reviews of the new one), and total addiction has gradually seeped in. I'm not a golf fan, so I can't rate it as a simulator, but as sheer, relaxing entertainment it's the best thing I've found yet for the Wii. The urge to play 'just one more round' is virtually irresistible.

Faults: The menu system is unintuitive, and if you don't know your golf you're left to figure out a lot for yourself. Further, the control system seems quite unresponsive the first few times you play it - until you realise that it's meant to be simulating a beginner golfer who can't control the strength of their swing etc.. It gets better, honest!

Strengths: The range of courses and types of game, the character creation options, the graceful learning curve, the skills system (where you choose to invest in different types of skill - power, spin, accuracy etc) and see the pay-off almost immediately.

All in all, a great game for anyone who doesn't mind their life disappearing down a hole for a few months.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, once you get used to it...   August 18, 2008

This is generally a very good game.

The graphics are not so bad for the wii, and finally it actually recognises a straight swing!

There a a few flaws in the game, such as, in some situations, you can't change the club and end up hitting the ball out of bounds.

I find the game great fun playing with friends, but haven't really played the single player.

Overall, good golfing fun,

1 out of 5 stars An improvement on 2007, but still a bit frustrating   July 11, 2008

I bought this game hoping that the experience from 2007 would be improved and at first glance, I thought this could be the case. However you have to complete a few practice sessions before you can start the game. All well and good I hear you cry, as practice makes perfect. However it appears that you cannot skip the practice lessons and must complete all practice levels before you can start playing proper and some of the practice shots can take quite some time to complete before you can start playing the game proper.

The game mode itself is very good and you soon master the shots, however one draw back, every shot hit seems to be at 110% (on a full swing), meaning shots overhit and chips out of the rough. Play is quick and graphics are very good.

The 2009 game is due for release later this year, so my suggestion might be wait until then to get the new one.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it!!   June 5, 2008

I don't like golf myself, but this game is great. Let the husband have first go, as setting up the players is a bit of a pig, but now can't keep off it. Sometimes we realise it is midnight and there is work to go to tomorrow! It's great fun all round, and the Tiger Woods Challenge with all its little mini competitions is brilliant. Much better than I ever expected - highly reccomend it.
